DIR-3 KYC Deadline: What Every Director Must File Each Year
Rosy Jaiswal
Every DIN holder must file DIR-3 KYC by 30 September each year, changed or not. Miss it and the DIN gets deactivated, with a 5,000 rupee penalty to reactivate.
If you hold a Director Identification Number, DIR-3 KYC isn't optional and it isn't a one-time filing. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs requires every DIN holder to confirm their details every financial year, whether or not anything about you has changed since last time.
Who has to file, and when
Anyone allotted a DIN on or before the end of a financial year must file DIR-3 KYC for that year by 30 September of the following year. This applies even to directors who resigned partway through the year, and even to a DIN that was allotted but never actually used to hold a directorship. The MCA doesn't check whether you're currently active in a company. It checks whether you hold a DIN.
Which form you file
If any of your personal details, mobile number, email, or address have changed since your last KYC filing, you file the full DIR-3 KYC e-form, which needs your Digital Signature Certificate and a practising professional's certification. If nothing has changed, you can file the simpler DIR-3 KYC-WEB, a web-based confirmation with no attachments or DSC required. Filing the wrong one wastes time, so check what changed before you start.
What happens if you miss the deadline
The MCA marks your DIN as "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC" the day after the deadline passes. A deactivated DIN blocks you from being appointed or continuing as a director on any company's records until you file and pay a penalty of 5,000 rupees per DIN to reactivate it. There's no grace period and no smaller fine for filing a few days late. It's the full penalty from day one after the deadline.
Details worth checking before you file
- Mobile number and email must each be verified with a fresh OTP during filing, even if they were verified last year
- PAN details must match your PAN card exactly, including name formatting
- Your address proof must not be older than two months at the time of filing
Don't wait for the reminder
We file DIR-3 KYC for every director on our roster in bulk each September, so nobody gets caught with a deactivated DIN in October. If you're managing your own filings and aren't sure whether this year's KYC needs the full form or the web version, check with us before the 30th, not after.
See our Director DIN e-KYC Update service if you'd rather we just handle it.
